Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL: Design and features

Design of Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL has been the subject of discussions and disputes well before the announcement. On the leaks, Google’s smartphones were not the most handsome devices (this, if you put it mildly). After the official debut, the negative will diminished, although still renderers and most of the photos are not able to convey the beauty of the devices.

Google Pixel 2 – the rare case where the main positive emotions arise only with a real acquaintance. Live glass patch on the back is not perceived as an unsuccessful experiment, but as an organic addition that turns an ordinary, by and large, appearance into something original. Look at the “backs” of popular devices and tell me if a solid metal panel would be better?

The screen with a diagonal of 5.5 “and QHD resolution is made using AMOLED technology, has a pixel density per inch of 534 ppi. By default, the panel behaves as a typical AMOLED way: juicy colors, bias in cold shades (to appear brighter). In this mode, it’s cool to spend time playing games, but working with photos delivers certain inconveniences because of the unnatural color rendering (in particular, because of the saturation of the faces people look red).

Fortunately, there is an alternative – the color mode sRGB, which can be activated in the section for developers. With it, the screen visually turns yellow, but this does not mean that the white balance goes far to the warm side. Rather, it becomes natural and this contrast catches the eye only the first few seconds after switching from the bluish standard mode.

The color rendering in sRGB is close to natural (almost 1-to-1 corresponds to Galaxy S8 edge in the “basic” mode) and with this screen you can not only play, but also watch video, work with photos. In direct comparison with high-quality IPS matrices, the Pixel 2 XL display with sRGB will appear not quite white, but this is already a feature of AMOLED technology with the structure of the PenTile matrix, where green subpixels prevail.

The range of brightness adjustment is wide, the oleophobic layer is excellent, and the viewing angles are high. Pixel 2 XL uses a new generation of AMOLED and thanks to the high resolution to criticize the picture for looseness all at a very high level. But the usual Pixel 2 with Full HD screen is not so clear. Work with photos. In direct comparison with high-quality IPS matrices, the Pixel 2 XL display with sRGB will appear not quite white, but this is already a feature of AMOLED technology with the structure of the PenTile matrix, where green subpixels prevail. This was all about design of Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.
